People are finding more fulfillment and inspiration in their jobs by incorporating spirituality and its practices into their work day. But before we jump into mediation at work, let’s dive deep into the concept of spirituality, how it can benefit you, and some first steps to incorporating practices at work.
What is spirituality?
Spirituality is a broad concept that has a lot of room for interpretation. For me, spirituality means being my best and most authentic self, putting others needs above my own, and connecting to the world in a way that allows me to see its beauty.
In more general terms, spirituality is a connection to something bigger than ourselves, and it largely involves the search for meaning in your life.
Benefits of spiritual well being include:
- Feeling content with life
- Maintaining balance and control of life
- Building positive relationships
- Feeling a purpose and meaning in life
- Accepting and growing from the challenges and changes in life
What does spirituality in the workplace mean?
Spirituality in the workplace means that you connect with the work you do each day. It also means that you feel your work is contributing to society in some meaningful way. That contribution can be big or small…it just has to hold true to your spiritual path and core values.
What are the benefits to bringing your spirituality into the workplace?
You will be able to bring your whole self to work
First, and most importantly, connecting to your spirituality in the workplace allows you to BRING YOUR WHOLE SELF TO WORK. Many of us women, especially women of color, have a work persona. We feel uncomfortable showing our true self due to fear of being considered emotional, or even stereotyped. We hold back on the parts of us that are really human and even vulnerable to be seen as “professional.” But showing up as your whole self at work is more about showing up authentically and being ok with who you are. Leading with your spirituality at work is a great way to be you. And you should seek work environments that promote this concept.
You will lead with inspiration and integrity in mind
Leading with your spirituality at the forefront means you can inspire employees by showcasing your integrity and honesty. Leaders that tune into their spirituality at work are often encouraging, allowing their staff to grow professionally and contribute to their work in a meaningful way. This leads to workers who feel valued, which is something we all want. Connecting to your spirituality at work can make you a stronger leader.
You will learn whether your organization shares your values
Many clients are looking for more fulfillment in their jobs and career. My first exercise is to have these clients write out their core values and identify whether or not their job or organization connects to these ideas. If not, it might be time to find one that does.
Being a spiritual being means you need to connect to something greater than yourself…that includes your job. Which by the way is where you spend the majority of your time. I myself have left positions because they did not hold true to my beliefs or core values. So if you are noticing that your work is not aligning with your beliefs then it might be time to look for a more value-based organization or career path.
How to bring your spiritual practices into your work
Try some of these small ideas which will bring big shifts in your work and that of your coworkers:
- Ask your company to set up a quiet room where employees can spend time reflecting or meditating. Company strapped for space? Propose to start with even a one or two hour quiet room block per week.
- Start each of your meetings with a short meditative exercise. Ask you team to close their eyes and complete some short breathing exercises. I love this, and research shows it helps set the mood for productivity.
- Encourage your team to read inspirational materials or even follow social media pages that post inspiring quotes. If you have inspiring books that need a new home then bring them into work and let people know they are available for the taking. If you have a few coworkers that read self-help material then you can start your own book share or work library of materials.
- Set up lunches with like minded co-workers and discuss some of the latest materials you have read or practices you are performing.
- Encourage the thoughts of everyone during team meetings. Make sure each person gets a chance to express their ideas and feel valued. Encourage inclusion in all discussions.
Although many people and organizations may shy away from the idea of spirituality in the workplace, I happen to be a huge proponent. Spirituality is the concept that we can connect to something greater than ourselves. The idea that there is more out there is what drives us all to be better and help society. Connecting to your spirituality will only make you a stronger person and better employee. So please do not strip yourself of this trait the moment you walk through the company doors. Embrace who you are and show your true self. Everyone will respect you more for it.
